The story behind the painting:

I always loved watching my young grandson Gordie playing with his toy soldiers. Occasionally, he would even ask me to join in with him... however, his army would always be the one to end up victorious. There was always a sense of innocence that permeated his play... even with it's juxtaposition against the “real-world's” tragic conflicts. It is certainly fascinating to observe any such young person as they totally get caught up in their own world of imagination. I immediately recognized this scene as perfect for my vision. With the use of strong light/dark contrasts as well as 3-dimensional emphasis... it was my hope to more effectively and completely bring the viewer into the child's world of imagination. At this point in his young life Gordie had aspirations of one day becoming a military historian. These more gown-up days... he now seems to be setting his goals on becoming an engineer. Ahhhh... again the unrelenting speed of time.
