Story Behind The Sculpture:
I first envisioned this concept while paging through a magazine and coming across an advertisement. I no longer remember what the ad was for, only that it contained a grouping of some actors, moving around within a room, while real fish were also swimming around them. I immediately started working up some fish doodles and while initially considering ceramic sculptures, I quickly realized that some elements, such as fins would be too fragile to simply make out of clay alone and understood that only by incorporating a wide variety of mixed media into the sculpture, could I create what I had envisioned. The planning for each piece had to therefore be very precise, as once the clay body had been fired into stoneware, I would no longer be able to carve or drill into it. It was necessary that I have to consider all future joining of different materials and make the appropriate adjustments in the original clay sculpture to facilitate such joining... including the necessary metal eye-screw-hooks for hanging and how the piece would balance. Although I may still consider the future use of cloth in the creation of fins... I have discovered the most effective method of creating such body parts, is to combine pipe-cleaners (as spines) and wide masking tape. Once all body parts are assembled, the creature is then completed with acrylic paint and varnish ready to be hung.
