Introspection
Availability: Original, Prints
This acrylic original is painted on stretched canvas and framed (However, the reflective portion of the mirror is painted in oils). Originals can be painted on hardboard or canvas and framed. Giclee prints are signed and numbered limited editions, which are then mounted on hardboard unframed (but can also be purchased framed for an additional cost) which makes them very similar in appearance to the original. These prints are available in a variety of sizes relevant to the size of the original... the larger the original the larger the print - please contact me for more information or to make a purchase.
The Story Behind the Painting:
Virtually every artist at one point or another has the urge to paint a self-portrait and I am no different. Sitting in my upstairs studio and looking at an old ornate mirror leaning against the wall, I figured this was the perfect time. As I developed the painting I also noticed a small mirror pane lying on my table and decided that this would provide an opportunity to also include a profile with my self-portrait. While the interior of the background room was all created with acrylics... I chose to paint my reflection and everything within the reflective area of the mirror with oils. Because I often listened to the radio while working in my studio, on this particular occasion the BBC program I was listening to was broadcasting a very fascinating program about the birth of the universe... The Big Bang. Also, as I look out on the world around me ...various parts of my own body often enter into my field of vision... therefore in this particular painting, my right foot and sandal enters into the picture. I must also admit that on a later date where this particular work was on display... I once had to explain to one exhibition viewer, that my painting wasn't actually dirty... the colouration on the walls was actually the real state of the wall in my old farmhouse studio.
