Story Behind The Sculpture:
This particular wooden Fantasy Fish mobile was possibly 10 years in creation. I had always been fascinated by the type of winged mobiles that the viewer could make the wings flap by pulling on a weight attached to the mobile's bottom centre. I determined to attempt to create one of these type sculptures. After I had drawn out my design for the body and the wings... I then transferred that design to a piece of 1/4 inch plywood, cut the pieces out, painted and assembled them. Very important aspects of this type of this type is weight and balance. Unfortunately, I at first made the weight of the body to heavy for the wings and rather than the wings standing out at 90 degrees to the body as they were supposed to, they instead stuck straight up. To compensate for this I drilled small holes i the lead edge of the wings that I filled with small round lead weights. After sealing the weights in, I again tried hanging the piece. This time instead of the wings standing straight up, they were now at a 45 degree angle... better but still no cigar. At this point I decided to let it rest and move on to other projects. It was likely at least 10 years later that while looking through a small craft store that I spied some small blue ceramic balls. I almost immediately envisioned how I might complete my long unfinished project. I took the balls home to my studio, created the 2 additional small fish shapes to hold them.... attached everything together... and viola!!... all was in perfect balance. Apparently... timing can be everything 🙂
